Bread for the World

This fall will be an important time for final action on Capitol Hill on the farm bill, funding for poverty-focused development assistance and other critical issues for hungry people.  Please join Bread for the World for three activities to help reduce hunger and poverty.

  • Any day between September 6 and October 15, take part in a Rolling Fast that calls for world leaders to end global poverty and cancel the debts of poor countries.

  • On Oct 17, STAND UP and SPEAK OUT against global poverty, hunger and inequality to remind world leaders whose countries had agreed to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to keep their promises.

  • Organize a Bread for the World Sunday on October 21 (or a Sunday of your choice between World Food Day on October 16 and Thanksgiving on November 22).

On Iraq

Interfaith Call to Fast, October 8, 2007

Rabbi Arthur Waskow of the Shalom Center has organized an interfaith call for an October 8th day of fasting and action focuses first on the war in Iraq, but also on street murders in our cities, mass murders in our schools, physical and sexual abuse in our families and even in  our religious communities, grotesque violence celebrated  in our media.

AFSC Wage Peace Campaign
T
his program of the American Friends Service Committee provides action updates, plus 2 very effective short visual experiences of the impact of the war –

A Catholic Petition to End the War is sponsored by Pax Christi USA, Catholics United, and NETWORK.

OCCUPATION PROJECT

Voices for Creative Nonviolence has organized the Occupation Project, a campaign of sustained nonviolent civil disobedience aimed at ending the U.S. war in and occupation of Iraq.  The campaign began in February 2007 with occupations at the offices of Representatives and Senators who refuse to pledge to vote against additional war funding. In the St. Louis area, contact the Occupation Project at www.occupationstl.net.

ELECTRONIC IRAQ

One of the outgrowths of Kathy Kelly's Voices in the Wilderness (renamed Voices for Creative Nonviolence) presence in Iraq is this excellent source from within Iraq, providing news, analysis, and the human stories of the war; to sneak behind the headlines and highlight the Iraqi experience of war.

PROTECT AMERICA ACT OF 2007

On Aug. 6, President Bush signed the Protect America Act of 2007 (PAA), S. 1927, granting the government the authority to wiretap anyone, including U.S. citizens, without any court approval as long as the "target" of the surveillance is located outside the U.S.
