IPJ Mission Statement and Focus
The Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ)
is an independent, interfaith, not-for-profit organization that creates
resources, provides learning experiences, and advocates publicly for
alternatives to violence and injustice at the individual, family,
community, institutional and global levels.
IPJ was
founded in 1970 by Dr. James McGinnis as a Peace Studies program at St.
Louis University. In 1975, it became an interfaith center assisting
families, educational and religious leaders and institutions, children and
youth, and whole communities. In 1981, IPJ created the
Parenting for Peace and Justice Network
(PPJN) and
program, extending its reach throughout the US and Canada to the rest of
the world. Challenged by racial and economic injustice, by war and
terrorism, by sexism and hate violence, IPJ has worked creatively,
consistently and collaboratively to teach and advocate for alternatives to
violence in public policy and life-styles. In 1996, this collaboration
resulted in the creation of the
Families Against Violence Advocacy Network (FAVAN)
and its Pledge of Nonviolence – for families, schools, faith communities,
workplaces and prisons. By 2004, IPJ had added a
Teens Acting for Peace Program,
a Pre-School Peace Program,
a
Violent Offenders Program,
with plans for a Grandparents
Acting for Peace Program
as well.
